Founded in 1902, Maharam has always been synonymous with high-quality textiles and forward-thinking design. Over the years, the brand has cultivated impactful partnerships with renowned designers and artists, resulting in a diverse range of products that push the boundaries of traditional textiles. By partnering with iconic figures, including Hella Jongerius, Konstantin Grcic and Paul Smith, Maharam has expanded its portfolio to include textiles that are as much about art and storytelling as they are about function.

London calling

Just last month, Maharam threw open the doors to its new home in the capital, situated on the ground floor of The Sans (a modernist building at 20 St John’s Square, Clerkenwell). Spanning three floors, the location features separate showrooms and retail spaces from Knoll, Herman Miller and Maharam, which all fall under the MillerKnoll collective.

Clerkenwell has long been considered London’s leading design district and is home to many of the biggest and brightest sparks in British architecture and design, as well as an annual design festival that draws international acclaim. Maharam’s inaugural commercial showroom in Europe represents the design company’s growing global presence and extends access to the business’s comprehensive offering of leathers and textiles.

Additionally, London-based artist Rana Begum has created a stunning new piece for the Maharam showroom, offering a fascinating preview of her upcoming contribution to Maharam Digital Projects (an ongoing series of large-scale, digitally printed wall installations produced in partnership with both emerging and established artists). Titled No. 1391, the piece measures 3050mm x 5590mm and reflects Begum’s explosive exploration of colour and pattern. Vibrant hues, applied on an architectural scale, create an immersive environment which is carefully balanced with thoughtful colour combinations and gradient tones that offer a sense of serenity to the super-size piece.

The Clerkenwell launch is not just about showcasing new collections, but rather reinforcing Maharam’s concerted effort to weave textiles into the broader tapestry of modern design.
