“Solitude in Motion” is a 2023 dance showcase produced by The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance, where dancers in their second year at California Institute of the Arts present self-choreographed solos. This poster symbolizes the fusion of artistic expression and functionality. I was influenced by the aesthetics of psychedelia and surrealism and wanted the design to capture “solitude,” the title, and the fundamental theme of the event. Each element serves a dual purpose of captivating attention and conveying the underlying message that this recital is all about solo dance. The placement of vibrant colors and collage-like image-making used in the poster creates a spotlight on the dancer, hinting at stage lighting and echoing the theme of solo dance. The energetic composition of the poster, characterized by the fluid forms of the human body, mirrors the flexibility of dance itself. I used gradients and glowing yellow highlights to capture the concept of motion, which also acts as a visual invitation. The design finds a harmonious balance by using clean typography, creating a visual symphony that guides the viewer. The design pushes the boundaries of traditional poster-making, being experimental is at the core of my practice, and with a fine arts background, I wanted this poster to merge art with design. I challenge conventions, daring to explore new techniques and styles in pursuit of a poster that is unique and contemporary design. Ultimately, the poster serves as a precursor to the dance recital, offering a provoking glimpse into the transformative experience that awaits the audience. It seeks to create anticipation, promising an evening of outstanding talent, and emotional resonance. “Solitude in Motion” transcends its role as a promotional tool; it serves as a beacon of creativity within the lively landscape of Los Angeles’ artistic scene.
