According to ‘Jingmen Zhou Zhi’, the Zhupi River originates from Shengjing Mountain in the north and forms at Luohan Slope in the west, joining at Beimen Bridge. Legend has it that the upper reaches of the Zhupi River used to be full of bamboo, and the residents of the city needed to make bamboo utensils, so they went to the upper reaches to cut down the bamboo and put the bamboo rafts into the river to float down, thus giving the Zhupi River its name! Here the river splits into two tributaries, drawing form like a crescent-shaped bay of water, named Moon Bay.
The site is on the Zhupi River, at the bridge between White Temple Road and the Moon Bay neighborhood. The site has a height difference and a two-story building was originally constructed with one floor on one side and two floors on the other. There are 10KV power lines in the original building volume, which is a great safety hazard. Near the bridge, the site has an uncovered garbage pile, which affects the cityscape a lot.
We wanted to create a landscape architecture that would not only be functional and aesthetically pleasing but also integrated into the local culture. Imagining the origin of Moon Bay, we envisioned that we could see a moon reflected in the water on the other side of the river, so the intention from the beginning was to design a bright moon. At the same time, the obstacles to the cityscape, such as the garbage dump, were hidden by the vegetation on the design slope; the original side of the building facing the river was a two-story space, and we specially made full use of it and designed a space for sanitation workers to rest and replenish their tea.
Public restrooms have always been in a rather embarrassing position in the city, but as one of the essential infrastructures, we have given it more values in landscape and function under the premise of the need for privacy. The façade along the river is made of corrugated acrylic panels instead of glass to maintain privacy, which not only obtains a hazy light and shadow effect, but also meets the requirement of Party A not to use glass.
