COEX BERCIANOS
What is a COEX?
In Spain, a COEX is a work center dedicated to the maintenance of roadways, and its acronym stands for: Conservation and Exploitation. That is, it is a meeting place between public and private administration, aimed at the conservation and maintenance of a specific geographic area, whether it be a section of a highway, a road district, etc. It is constructed and maintained at the proposal of a public administration, whether it be of state, regional, or local nature. Specifically, COEX BERCIANOS is a work center, promoted by a public institution: the Junta de Castilla y León and built by the ACCIONA company.

What is Bercianos?
Bercianos del Real Camino is a municipality with around 200 inhabitants, part of the Sahagún region, province of León, located between that city and Burgos. Bercianos is also located within Tierra de Campos, bordering the provinces of Valladolid and Palencia.

What is COEX BERCIANOS?
It is a COEX dedicated to the operation and maintenance of a specific section of the A-231 Camino de Santiago Highway. It covers everything from road conservation, landscape, traffic, road surfaces in winter due to snowfall, traffic accidents, etc., and operations regarding the maintenance of those road sections, with specific contractual parameters and precise objectives.

The architectural program of the building responds to a specific program:

Open spaces, work area, a specific roadworthiness area for this type of center, administrative area, and storage area with salt silos, brine factory, specific installations, maintenance, and vehicle storage, etc., as reflected in the attached documentation.
But fundamentally, what does the project respond to?
It represents the response to the desire of professionals to find a model, a construction paradigm that would adapt to three essential points:
1. To the required function: road maintenance
2. To the necessary aesthetics: the building had to have a propositional aesthetic, with a limited budget
3. To the reality imposed by the location, a complex location that must have access to a medium-traffic highway, and a plot that lacks public services…
Independent professionals, people from the Administration, project managers, lawyers, workers, all converge in the significant gradient of the projected work and finally built. Numerous problems appeared in the drafting of the project and the execution of the work, but as the idea was versatile and propositional, it adapted without problems to this plot and another from the aforementioned highway. It generated a model, a paradigm: the CYLCOEX, which proved to be capable of adapting to this and other requests.
