Dubai Health Innovations is a 1,800 sqm innovation hub within Dubai’s integrated Academic Health System, designed to transform healthcare through interdisciplinary collaboration, discovery, and real-world application. Serving simultaneously as an academic space and a research accelerator, the hub teaches design thinking to MBRU medical students while supporting clinicians, researchers, engineers, designers, entrepreneurs, and industry partners in developing impactful health solutions. Its identity is rooted in co-creation, ensuring the built environment authentically reflects the needs and aspirations of its community.

The project was shaped through a deeply participatory design process. A series of co-creation workshops brought together doctors, nurses, faculty, students, and designers, establishing a culture of “designing with, not for.” This inclusive approach informed every aspect—from material selection to spatial configuration. The interior architecture mirrors the design thinking process itself: moving from empathy to ideation, prototyping, and testing. Open collaboration zones, writable walls, flexible seating, and modular partitions foster creativity and rapid iteration. Testing environments, including UX/UI labs, clinical experiment rooms, and dual fabrication labs, translate ideas into real-world prototypes. Thematic innovation labs: AI & Data, Robotics & Sensors, XR & BCI, and Design Lab support specialized research while maintaining fluid connectivity across disciplines.

Flexibility and adaptability form the backbone of the design. Reconfigurable layouts, mobile furniture, and integrated storage allow spaces to evolve with emerging technologies and project needs. Natural light, glass walls, and biophilic textures promote well-being, visibility, and sustained engagement. Technology is seamlessly integrated throughout VR/AR zones, smart displays, sensor-enabled environments, and advanced prototyping tools are embedded rather than isolated. Sustainability is central: locally fabricated 3D-printed furniture and partitions are lightweight, reusable, and durable for up to ten years, supporting circular design principles.

Since its opening on September 9 of this year, the center has accelerated innovation across Dubai Health: enabling 25+ projects, generating 12 research publications, and training 300+ of students and faculty. More than a physical space, Dubai Health Innovations is a living framework for discovery—uniting healthcare and technology to shape the future of medical advancement.
