Designed as a dynamic social retreat for a Los Angeles-based client who loves entertaining, it transforms the concept of an outhouse into an energetic party zone. Every design choice reflects the client’s vibrant personality, inspiring gatherings within a playful yet polished architectural language that emphasizes fluid indoor-outdoor connections, bold materials, and ambient lighting.
At its heart, the design embraces biophilic and Zen-inspired principles. A preserved tree rises through a circular roof void, symbolizing harmony between architecture and nature. A raked sand garden introduces meditative calm, reflecting Japanese Zen traditions, while organic geometries and rounded glazing dissolve boundaries. Natural materials like stone, wood, and earthy tones ground the space in authenticity, with expansive glazing inviting light and landscape inside, fostering clarity and openness. Minimalist detailing ensures nature remains the focal point, creating a timeless sanctuary where stillness and vibrancy coexist.
