Gathering Grove emerges as a curated enclave of leisure, embodying celebration, spirit, and connection. Designed as a dynamic social retreat for a Los Angeles-based client who loves entertaining, it transforms the concept of an outhouse into an energetic party zone. Every design choice reflects the client’s vibrant personality, inspiring gatherings within a playful yet polished architectural language that emphasizes fluid indoor-outdoor connections, bold materials, and ambient lighting.
At its heart, the design embraces biophilic and Zen-inspired principles. A preserved tree rises through a circular roof void, symbolizing harmony between architecture and nature. A raked sand garden introduces meditative calm, reflecting Japanese Zen traditions, while organic geometries and rounded glazing dissolve boundaries. Natural materials like stone, wood, and earthy tones ground the space in authenticity, with expansive glazing inviting light and landscape inside, fostering clarity and openness. Minimalist detailing ensures nature remains the focal point, creating a timeless sanctuary where stillness and vibrancy coexist.
The design evolves in response to its context. Location-specific nuances, from natural light to cultural influences, inform the palette, materials, and form. Coastal settings inspire breezy tones and humidity-resistant finishes, while urban aspects introduce modern precision. Historical and cultural elements are woven into bespoke craftsmanship, anchoring the project authentically.
Walking through the space reveals a dialogue of contrasts: modern opulence meets organic grounding, raw tactility intertwines with refined elegance. A sculptural stone bar and floating stairway serve as focal points, complemented by jewel-toned seating and gilded accents. Interiors harmonize through sleek lines and organic curves, where stone and marble interact and vibrant colors meet natural neutrality. Sculptural art integrates seamlessly with functional design, showcasing a narrative where luxury arises from intention rather than excess.
The dining area epitomizes organic geometry and sculptural elegance, with fluid curves and assertive lines defining its architecture. Tactile wood and deep dark marble create a refined, intimate environment, inviting gathering and conversation. Each detail fosters a sensorial experience, marrying modernity with restraint and clarity.
The project excels in its fusion of nature, material richness, and sculptural form. Timber, stone, glass, and ambient light coalesce to elevate the everyday. The preserved tree beneath the skylight acts as a co-creator, grounding the space while fostering a spiritual openness. The outhouse transcends a mere room, becoming a sanctuary where architecture dialogues with the landscape.
