The International Pediatric Hospital in Ashgabat is conceived as a healthcare environment where architecture mediates between clinical performance and the emotional world of children. With a capacity of 160 beds and a construction area of approximately 35,000 m², the project establishes a new benchmark for pediatric care in Turkmenistan while positioning itself as a significant healthcare node within Central Asia.
As part of the International Healthcare Center, the hospital consolidates advanced diagnostics, treatment, and specialized pediatric services within a single integrated facility. This strengthens regional healthcare capacity, reduces reliance on external treatment, and supports long-term medical development.
The architectural approach is grounded in child-centered design, where scale, perception, and atmosphere are carefully calibrated. The building is articulated into interconnected volumes, reducing its institutional mass and creating a more approachable and legible environment. The entrance level is conceived as a fluid landscape, where circulation is guided by daylight, visual connections, and courtyards that structure orientation and spatial experience.
Within this framework, play becomes spatial infrastructure. Play areas, informal zones, and shared spaces are embedded throughout the hospital, transforming circulation and waiting into active environments. This is paired with a family-centered design strategy, where spaces support the presence and involvement of caregivers. Together, these approaches reduce anxiety, foster familiarity, and strengthen the psychological resilience of young patients.
Functionally, the hospital is organized through a clear hierarchy of clinical intensity. High-performance zones such as operating theatres, intensive care, and laboratories are consolidated within controlled areas, while outpatient and public functions are located at ground level for accessibility. Vertical circulation ensures efficient movement while maintaining separation between patient, staff, and service flows.
Environmental and social sustainability are integrated into the design. Daylight-driven planning, compact massing, and efficient circulation reduce energy demand, while courtyards and natural materials enhance spatial quality. The project prioritizes inclusivity and well-being, creating a supportive environment for children, families, and healthcare staff.
Ultimately, the project reframes the pediatric hospital as more than a place of treatment. Through the integration of play, family presence, and spatial clarity, it becomes a humane and adaptive environment—one that transforms healthcare into an experience of comfort, engagement, and care.
