Nestled among the tall trees of Vitosha Mountain, Bulgaria, Kuker Hut is a serene retreat for artists, painters, and nature enthusiasts. Located just 20 km from the centre of Sofia, near the popular hiking route Zlatnite Mostove (The Golden Bridges), it offers an escape where nature, tradition, and design intertwine.
With a long and dynamic history, Kuker Hut has served various roles — from a scientific base to a military rest station. Its latest transformation, completed in 2025 by ATG Design, redefines the concept of the Bulgarian mountain hut. The renovation introduces comfort and individuality while preserving the building’s authenticity. Each apartment features a private bathroom — a rarity among Bulgarian huts — and restored tiles hand-painted with forest-inspired motifs.
The design approach emphasizes harmony between architecture and nature. Contemporary elements are blended with original features, such as restored furniture pieces that retain their vintage charm. Authentic kuker artefacts, masks, and costumes bring Bulgarian folklore into the interior, turning the hut into a living tribute to tradition.
Each of the ten unique apartments tells its own story, evoking a fairytale-like atmosphere. Bedroom murals created by students from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia add a distinctive artistic layer. The first apartment serves as a multifunctional space for yoga, pilates, meditation, and creative workshops.
Traditional cuisine complements the experience, offering classic Bulgarian dishes like homemade banitsa and bean stew in clay pots — prepared with preserved recipes and presented in a modern way.
