The project aims to regenerate six areas in Monterotondo Scalo, located along the Rome–Orte railway line. The goal is to create flexible, multifunctional public spaces that are designed as green infrastructure systems. The project was initiated by the local authorities to provide additional services to citizens and represents an opportunity to enhance wellbeing and foster social inclusion. The project focuses on improving urban green spaces by increasing the quality of green amenities, strengthening urban connections between the city’s main points of interest and introducing additional facilities such as playgrounds, sports fields and dog areas.
Key project facilities include football pitches, basketball and volleyball courts, outdoor fitness areas, picnic zones, children’s playgrounds, dog areas and urban gardens, supporting diverse uses and encouraging daily outdoor activities for all age groups.
The pathways are fully accessible and made of porous concrete paving. This reduces stormwater runoff through natural infiltration and enhances groundwater recharge thanks to its permeability. The materials are durable and low-maintenance, offering high mechanical performance. They comply with sustainable standards and can be fully recycled at the end of their life cycle.
Designed according to principles of universal accessibility and usability, the project reclaims residual and underused urban spaces for collective use, creating inclusive outdoor environments that respond to the needs of a broad and diverse user base. The integration of sustainable design solutions contributes to improved environmental quality, increased social interaction and enhanced community well-being.
