Our Wooden Cube Mashrabiya is an external shading system that transforms the façade into a performative and expressive architectural layer. Composed of wooden cubes suspended on a stainless-steel framework, the system acts as a second skin that filters sunlight, air, and views, balancing functionality and sculptural presence.
Each cube features unique inner cuts that create a dynamic play of light and shadow, changing throughout the day according to the sun’s movement. This rhythmic transformation enhances both the interior atmosphere and the building’s environmental performance, reducing glare and solar heat while maintaining natural ventilation and transparency.
The project integrates precise construction detailing and careful material execution. The wooden elements are crafted from responsibly sourced timber and connected through a lightweight yet durable metal grid, allowing accurate alignment and long-term stability. The design process considered structural feasibility, fabrication methods, and maintenance efficiency to ensure both elegance and practicality.
Conceptually, the project draws inspiration from Japanese aesthetics, particularly the notions of Wa (harmony) and Ma (the space between things). These ideas guided the balance between order and randomness, fullness and void, structure and light. The seemingly irregular inner cuts of each cube evoke an organic rhythm, where shadow, air, and silence become part of the composition. Through this approach, Secondskin becomes not only a functional shading device but also a poetic expression of spatial harmony and crafted precision.
