Embedded within the limestone cliffs of West Austin, the house does not sit upon the hill; it enters into it. Horizontal strata echo the geological layers of Texas stone, while curved walls trace the contours of the terrain. Conceived as a calibrated incision rather than an imposition, the architecture becomes an extension of the hillside, rising only to dissolve into it.

The project draws from two ancient lineages: the rock-cut sanctuaries of India and the sedimentary formations of Central Texas. For a client of Indian origin, principles of traditional temple architecture, including cosmic alignment, procession, water, and sacred geometry, are reinterpreted through the tectonics of the American landscape. A central organizing axis unfolds as a spiral derived from fossilized limestone impressions found on site, guiding movement and framing moments of compression and release.

Portions of the residence are carved directly into the rock, where raw stone meets refined material. A crescent-shaped courtyard pool recalls the stepwell as both a climatic device and symbolic center, cooling the terrace while reflecting sky and canyon. Embedded construction and passive environmental strategies allow the house to weather and patinate over time, conceived as an architecture that ultimately returns to the earth from which it was shaped.
