Set among the leafy streets of Kew in Melbourne, Thomas Street House stands as a measured response to the rhythms of multigenerational living. It is shaped not by permanence alone but by the inevitability of change, softening the distance between generations through flexibility, openness, and resilience.
An arched entry draws you inward as the city gives way. At the center, a shared clearing anchors the home, gathering two wings, one devoted to retreat and the other to communal life. Circulation revolves around this pause, allowing daily routines to cross without friction and giving the house its quiet cadence.
Multi-generational living here does not follow convention but redirects intention. Separate entrances establish independence, while private suites provide retreat. The primary living spaces remain grounded, open to the garden and pool. Private spaces for gathering, work, restoration and pause are distributed across levels so the home can shift with its occupants without losing its calm.
Curved forms organize movement through the plan, shaping spatial flow with a gentle continuity. Chevron timber floors, textured finishes, and fine joinery respond to the movement of daylight, allowing shadow, reflection, and weather to become part of the interior atmosphere. The house breathes outward, shaped by sun and the passing of the day.
Below ground, darker tones, stone and ceramic surfaces form a sequence of contained spaces. A bar, cinema and wellness rooms sit within this layer of the home, creating inward worlds that contrast the openness above and offer moments of immersion, ritual, and renewal.
Environmental strategies are embedded rather than applied, from passive solar design to rainwater harvesting, each is unified in support of longevity through quiet intelligence.
Thomas Street House is not a static object. It is a living framework. A home designed to hold change and remain meaningful across generations.
