The retrofit and extension of Um Bock School preserves far more than a building; it safeguards memory, identity, and community ties. Originally built in the 1950s, the school’s concrete framework and interior red brick walls were carefully retained, preserving their authentic materials and aged patina. Rather than fully replacing damaged areas, the project embraced a sensitive, sustainable approach that combines restoration, extension, and creative repair.
The design departs from traditional corridor layouts, organizing classrooms and circulation into offset, interlocking volumes around a central patio. These light-filled spaces double as informal learning and social zones, while square classrooms provide maximum adaptability for evolving pedagogical methods and inclusive education. New facilities, including a sports hall, climbing wall, and dance studio, extend the school’s reach to the wider community, fostering social cohesion and active civic engagement.
Environmental sustainability is integral to the project. Preserving the original concrete and brick structure minimized demolition waste and embodied carbon, while participatory repair processes allowed children to contribute small, playful brick elements, subtly embedding creativity into the architecture. Long-term social sustainability is achieved through flexible spaces that adapt to evolving educational needs, reducing the need for frequent renovations, and multifunctional areas that serve both students and the broader community.
The extension respects the scale, orientation, and materiality of the 1950s building, using exposed wood-textured concrete interiors and red fibre cement panels to echo the original mineral character. Wood accents and soft grey-blue tones create a welcoming environment, while landscaped areas and façade colours reflect the region’s natural and cultural context.
Through participatory design, flexible spatial strategies, heritage preservation, and multifunctional programming, Um Bock School transforms into more than a learning environment, it becomes a civic hub and co-created legacy. Its architecture demonstrates how careful retrofit, innovative design, and community engagement can deliver sustainable, socially meaningful, and resilient public buildings.
“Our aim was to find a solution that costs less, looks better, and brings much more social value.” – Lead Architect.
