Unpair challenges the traditional left-right footwear system by introducing a fully symmetrical and interchangeable shoe design.
For over a century, footwear has been built on the assumption that shoes must exist in pairs with distinct left and right forms. This project rethinks that foundation by proposing a universal design that can be worn on either foot, reducing redundancy and expanding functional flexibility.
Through a combination of symmetrical sole geometry and adaptive structure, Unpair explores how product architecture can be simplified while maintaining comfort and usability. The concept also opens new possibilities for inventory efficiency, modular replacement, and waste reduction in the footwear industry.
Rather than focusing on aesthetics alone, Unpair represents a systemic redesign of a familiar product category — questioning long-standing conventions and offering a new perspective on how everyday objects can evolve.
Unpair
Unpair Studio is an independent design practice founded by Hui Min Yang, focused on rethinking conventional footwear systems through symmetry, interchangeability, and functional innovation. The studio explores new possibilities in product design by challenging traditional left-right shoe construction and developing adaptable concepts that combine sustainability, usability, and visual simplicity.
