Cedar House is a conceptual residential design project, developed as part of a student portfolio for the Diploma of Building Design. Created to explore the intersection of sustainability, adaptability and timeless aesthetics, the home offers a compelling vision for how architecture can respond to place, climate and evolving family needs.
Set in the coastal village of Palm Cove, between the Great Barrier Reef and the surrounding tropical rainforests, Cedar House captures the essence of modern Queenslander living. The home embraces its natural context through an open-plan layout that enhances cross-ventilation, maximises natural light and reinforces the indoor-outdoor connection that defines tropical architecture. Deep eaves, large operable windows and a central fernery work in harmony to create a tranquil, climate-responsive interior environment.
Inspired by the authenticity and character of Queenslander homes, Cedar House features vaulted ceilings, timber cladding and a material palette grounded in nature. At its heart is a spacious kitchen and social hub that flows seamlessly into dining and living areas — designed for both relaxed family living and effortless entertaining.
The concept places a strong emphasis on adaptability, with flexible spaces designed to grow with a family over time. Additionally, integrated throughout the design are subtle yet impactful features that support long-term livability. The home includes a step-free entrance, level thresholds and wider internal doorways and circulation spaces, ensuring accessibility and ease of movement for all residents and guests. Smooth transitions between rooms and between inside and out, allow for a continuous, intuitive flow that enhances both functionality and experience. These elements, while understated, allow the home to remain responsive to the needs of its occupants over time — offering flexibility without compromising design integrity.
Sustainability is at the core of this concept. Cedar House integrates solar energy, rainwater harvesting and the use of sustainable materials, selected for their durability in tropical climates and minimal environmental impact.
While conceptual in nature, Cedar House demonstrates a fully resolved and practical approach to residential design. It proposes a home that is beautiful, functional, sustainable and ready to adapt to the future — a thoughtful response to both climate and community, grounded in real-world design standards.
