Centennial College’s A Building Expansion embodies the poetry of Chief R. Stacey Laforme and celebrates “Two-Eyed Seeing,” a Mi’kmaq concept blending Indigenous and Western perspectives. As Canada’s first LEED Gold, net-zero carbon, WELL-certified, mass timber higher-education building, it exemplifies a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

The building is nestled among native plantings and aligned with cardinal directions, with an East-facing entrance honoring longhouse tradition. Students’ journeys begin at Wisdom Hall’s grand stair, where informal spaces foster spontaneous conversation. At Level 3, the stair opens to a Student Hub and Café, featuring Indigenous cuisine that offers a cultural experience.

Wisdom Hall’s main corridor showcases wood baffles resembling flowing water, reflecting Indigenous heritage. Commissioned artworks by Indigenous artists tell Creation Stories, enriching students’ pathways to class.

At its core, the circular Indigenous Commons reverberates with drumbeats—a ceremonial space filled with natural light, framed by Douglas-fir ribbons intricately woven between thirteen timber ribs representing moon cycles.

The building’s lower levels house flexible classrooms, labs, and learning spaces, while the upper floors consist of agile workspaces. Inclusive features like All-Gender Washrooms, Lactation Rooms, and a Multi-Faith Space meet diverse needs.

A timeless, muted design palette highlights the mass timber structure, with bright red accents symbolizing knowledge and learning in Indigenous culture. The A Building Expansion is a living expression of reconciliation, inviting students to bring this poem to life.
