Guangdong Taishan Maritime Silk Road Museum is located in Chuandao Town, Taishan City, Guangdong Province, China. As a part of the national archaeological site park, it is the core supporting project for the declaration of China’s “Maritime Silk Road” world cultural heritage. The main body of the building is reconstructed from the original site of the only school on the island. Geographically, since ancient times, Taishan as the hub of the east to west ocean route, is an important node of the Maritime Silk Road.

The design run through the concept of old and new dialogue, that is, old school buildings and new museums, traditional materials and newly developing materials. Not limited to architectural design, based on the “Emergence Theory”, we conduct multi-dimensional overall design of the heritage park, exhibitions and cultural activities.

The original school building is a single three-storey building with the total construction area of 2200 m2. In the project, we have added expansion space, connection space, functional blocks and viewing platform. After reconstruction, the indoor area is 1800 m2, including the Maritime Silk Road Cultural Exhibition Hall of 1150 m2 and other public areas of 650 m2 which include office space and auxiliary space.

The exterior wall is made of local traditional building materials, gray bricks. The simple and classical appearance of light gray is harmonious with the surrounding environment. Through several different brick laying methods, the changes and rhythm of the architectural appearance can be displayed, and the whole construction is filled with elegant without losing flexibility. Tiny “windows” between brick stacks just like the bridge between space and time. Internal visitors can also enjoy the sea scenery while watching the exhibition and imagine the prosperity of ancient maritime trade.

The building face to the sea in the west and is surrounded by churches, ruins, cemeteries, villages and docks, forming a cultural circle of heritage site, museum and settlement. In the process of design, we uphold the spirit of cultural integration, extend the intersection of culture to the intersection of time and space. Today, the island has attracted more and more visitors from all over the world.
