On our first trip to bungalow in township of Aamby valley, struck by the fog and rain clouds that descended low, making them appear as they were within the house. This mirage made us want to blend the environs with earthy color scheme.

The dilapidated structure’s faceted ceiling became main source of inspiration. It has the look of uncut mountain which then influenced the flooring choices that have angular patterns. The geometry eventually gave character to the house, as everything from the staircase, to the ceiling has been placed at dramatic angles.

The project – Upcycled House since the decor employs upcycled building materials. The client is well-known builder who has tons of material available from different sites at hand.

The house overlooks a picturesque valley on a large, landscaped site of 20,000 sq.ft. The layout was designed to encourage organic connections between spaces. Openings in key areas like living room and bedrooms were included to facilitate link between the indoors and outdoors. A conscious attempt was made to preserve elements of original house.

A mushroom grey tone dominates the facade of 5,000-sq.ft villa, Black entrance reveals a double-heighted living room which makes the home more voluminous. The ground floor has two bedrooms, a dining room, a private cinema with a separate pantry and powder room.

The house’s flooring has subtle play of lines that lend direction. The driveway made from residue available on sites, which is paved in grey blocks broken by flamed granite in chevron pattern. These diagonal inspired form pitched roof. The geometry continues in the house as flooring patterns, conduit layouts and railings.

The original house’s staircase was retained and converted to sculptural element adjacent to the entrance foyer, with chamfered steps in keeping with the theme of subtle, treatment to conventional objects.

Avoided focused lighting considering ambient light fixtures; chandeliers and faceted ceilings that reflect light, to make the inhabitants feel at ease. The light conduits have been laid diagonally on walls and exposed, lending rawness to the warm home. The living room chandelier is reminiscent of a beehive, which casts interesting shadows, putting on show for family lounge above, which overlooks the space. The sofas and chairs, from the owner’s ancestral home, have been repurposed and add just the right burst of colour to muted interiors.

The kitchen counter has been made from leftover paver blocks. The dark color cabinets compliment the gray walls.

Pitch black painted chandeliers, which resemble tree trunks hung upside down, gently illuminate the family room. Adjoining is massage studio with ceiling made from ship wood.

Each of the four bedrooms features a neutral setting that allows accent furniture, décor to shine through.

The guest bathroom in the Upcycled House has a feature wall behind a black marble counter, made of marble with horizontal grooves, to provide texture to space.

Essentially, the space was designed keeping comfort and elegance in mind. Modest luxury, clean lines and use of exquisite materials and artifacts were the key factors to deigning this space.
