When this residential project presented itself, the design firm knew that it was a unique opportunity. Volumetrically the interior architecture of this residence presented a grand expression almost gallery-like that spoke to a rarified point of view. This led to heavily researching a multitude of artisans and furniture designers to fill the home. In doing so the interior design firm also designed several pieces for this home and of course “the piece de resistance” was this collaboration with a lighting designer.

While for many homes of this elk, the expected would be to present a pendant light in the dining room, here, a different approach was taken. The vista from the dining room clearly framed the custom stone hand carved stairway, almost becoming a beacon for the home. This spiral staircase was the perfect backdrop for a sculptural piece that also serendipitously is a light form that defines, as well as formalizes, the dining room adjacent to it.

The creative team knew that they needed to design a piece that was like no other and that looked as beautiful off as well as on. They also knew that it needed to embrace the connotation of glass. The team researched old-school hand-crafted artisans and started to focus on jewelry designers. In doing so, they understood that the back of a handcrafted piece of jewelry was just as beautiful and as important as the front of the piece, especially when it came to mounting stones. The designers also did not want the proverbial sparkle seen with a lot of other fixtures and knew that they needed something uniquely sculptural but at the same time would give an understated sparkle that could morph as the day went by in the home. As they were studying the jewelry world, they found the cutting techniques of Cabochon stones, this became the perfect launch point for their journey. They developed the light’s bijou presence by adopting this cutting technique. The vision was to create a sculptural piece that highlighted a hand-crafted technique, giving the allusion of a delicate piece of jewelry with a delicate internal lighting system, which was almost tertiary to the piece but complements the overall interior metal work.

The firms’ commitment to this journey was unwavering. The light is completely unique and unexpected as you make your way around the home. The hand-carved stone staircase spiral between three floors. Its sinuous curves are countered by this cut-glass pendant light that hangs from the ceiling for 30 feet. It morphs from a sculptural piece to a column of light that is almost hypnotic when experienced. The scale and attention to detail make this piece exceptional and memorable.
