The design of the house was shaped by two central challenges: a historically evolved context and strict local design regulations. From in-depth discussions with the client and a careful analysis of the planning framework, a clear architectural concept emerged – the interlocking of two building volumes: a functional service wing and a clearly structured main residence.
By recessing the service wing, a distinct entrance situation is created at the point of intersection. This threshold is accentuated by a delicate timber slat screen that defines a semi-private transitional space. As a recurring motif throughout the design, this architectural element contributes to a cohesive and consistent design language.
The entrance area incorporates the cloakroom and provides access to the garage via a utility room, as well as to the adjacent office. A centrally positioned cube accommodates a guest WC, additional storage, and the vertical circulation to the upper floors. This core opens into a linear living wing, where kitchen, dining and living functions flow seamlessly into one another. The living area is oriented towards the garden and is subtly separated from the dining and kitchen zones by a spatially defining fireplace. The kitchen is embedded within a solid wall element and faces the street.
The upper floor comprises two children’s bedrooms with a shared bathroom, as well as a private master suite. While the children’s rooms are oriented towards the street, the master suite – with bedroom, walk-in closet and bathroom – opens towards the garden and the pool beyond, creating a calm and secluded retreat.

Klaus Mäs Architektur
Klaus Mäs founded his architecture practice Klaus Mäs Architektur in 2012, immediately after completing his studies in architecture at TH Cologne and RWTH Aachen University. The office has since specialized in the design and realization of high-end single-family homes, tailored precisely to the needs of the clients and the specific characteristics of the local context.
