The project original architectural form fully reflects Singapore’s architectural culture in the early part of the 20th century.
The design of the KPO keeps the urban memory of the Singapore locals. Its design retains the original architectural structure to retain the city memory. Its design challenges are to maintain the one’s memory and inject creative design within the box. The design reconfigures most part of external walls, allowing more physical interaction between the internal and external areas. The interior space and the external green are well integrated, which gives a feel of outdoor experiences when oneself is inside KPO. The design of glass skylight integrates the application of contemporary design in contrast with its old building form, transforming its former rigid spatial pattern into livelier space. The creation of dynamic spatial flow is essential within the interior space, using natural daylighting as primary light source than using the artificial lighting. The upper and lower level of loft space creates a well-integrated vertical spatial volume. The main deck of restaurant at the 1st floor void area gets natural daylighting via skylight for energy saving which also creates a very conducive environment for dining in.
KPO is one of continuous exploration for low-carbon green building project. Materials such as wallpaper and paint, which produces harmful carbon emissions, are not used. The natural raw concrete and recyclable wood are main design elements, which brings natural, green and conducive environment for end users.
The project uses large amount of recycled wood and recyclable design components, which saves costs and eliminate hazardous pollution during construction. In time to come for moving or demolition, most of the building materials can be reused and recycled.
