Manoir Hovey, situated on Lake Massawippi in Quebec, is named after Ebenezer Hovey, an early Connecticut-born settler whose American heritage epitomizes the region’s history. In 1900, Henry Atkinson of Atlanta Power built a summer mansion on the lake, which later became Manoir Hovey. Inspired by Mount Vernon, the mansion features an expansive verandah and tall colonnade facing the lake. In 2020, the hotel underwent a major renovation, updating its pool and adding a new spa.
Le Spa at Manoir Hovey is set on a steep hillside next to the hotel. The site’s challenging incline and limited buildable area required significant structure for soil retention and drainage. Engineers successfully integrated complex mechanical systems between the decks and hillside, out of sight. The project also faced complications due to its proximity to the historic building and established landscaping. SWDL, the landscape architect, managed the integration into the landscape and addressed environmental impacts.
At the entry level, the spa building’s modest size defers to the Manor, with its single-story portico contrasting the Manor’s height. An arch and vault frame a lake view and lead guests to a grand staircase descending to the pool level.
Guests find the pool and hot tub to the right and the spa entrance to the left. Amenities on this level include the pool, hot tub, reception, locker rooms, hammam, therapeutic shower, relaxation rooms, sauna, and cold plunge. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the trees and lake. A private terrace features the outdoor thermal circuit, sauna, cold plunge, hot tub, and relaxation room.
Due to the steep site, the locker rooms are windowless, but a two story skylight in the women’s change room pierces through the upper levels, capturing natural light. One level down includes a relaxation room, mani-pedi room, and six massage rooms (some including showers), with direct access to landscaped lakeshore gardens and a private swimming dock.
From the lake, the spa mirrors the Manor’s colonnade highlighting their design relationship. The columns also serve to define the exterior stair space, provide privacy for suite balconies, and regulate views and sunlight within the spa.
The architects used the traditional exterior to create a flexible interior. “The historical references on the outside allowed for innovative, neutral interiors that explore new guest experiences.” New suites feature king beds with lake views, large private terraces, well-appointed bathrooms, and skylights. The spa’s clean, serene interiors use stone finishes in the hammam and tree trunk columns in the massage rooms to reflect local nature.
The renovation and expansion of Manoir Hovey combine historical appreciation with modern design. Integrating Le Spa into the landscape while preserving the hotel’s heritage enhances its legacy. The design—blending manor-inspired colonnades with nature-inspired interiors—demonstrates a commitment to visual harmony.
