Mitsugo was designed as a private, flexible home for a young couple starting their life together in Jakarta. From the beginning, they had a clear vision: a house that could grow with them as they planned to raise three children. Privacy and adaptability became the foundation of the design.
The site faces northwest and sits along a narrow street, a common condition in Jakarta where houses often occupy the entire lot, leaving little room for greenery. Combined with the city’s hot climate, this often leads to fully enclosed, air-conditioned living. The clients initially shared this mindset, questioning the need for outdoor space. Part of our approach was to show how integrating nature could improve comfort and daily living.
We began with a single mass, then carved out the left side to bring in softer morning light and frame a view of an existing tree behind the site—one with sentimental value to the family. To enhance privacy, the first floor was set back from the street, creating a buffer that softens the house’s presence.
The layout is straightforward. The ground floor starts with service areas at the front, followed by the living space and a multifunction room connected directly to the courtyard. The upper floor is dedicated to bedrooms. To reduce heat gain, less frequently used spaces—such as circulation, storage, and the master bathroom—are placed on the west side, acting as a buffer against the afternoon sun.
Climate played a key role in shaping the design. A gable roof helps manage heat while maintaining natural brightness. Sliding doors allow spaces to be opened for ventilation or closed for privacy and air conditioning, giving the house flexibility.
At the center of the design is the courtyard, positioned on the left side. It anchors the house visually and spatially, allowing light and air to reach deeper into the interior. From the entrance, there is a clear line of sight toward this space. The entry itself is defined by natural stone, crafted by local artisans, creating a warm and grounded arrival.
Material choices support longevity and adaptability. Wood-textured concrete is used throughout to blur the boundary between inside and outside, while sintered stone flooring provides a durable, natural surface that ages over time.
The multifunction room best represents the house’s flexibility. Originally intended for various uses, it has since become a playroom after the couple unexpectedly welcomed triplets—all three children at once. It inspired the name Mitsugo, meaning “triplets” in Japanese.
Mitsugo is a home designed to evolve—offering privacy, adaptability, and a subtle connection to nature. It supports the family as they continue to grow and change over time.
Pranala Associates
Established in 2007, Pranala Associates is a joint partnership of two architects, Ronald Pallencaoe and Erick Sugiharto, later on, joined by Darius Tanujoyo in 2017.
Pranala explores the relationship between the inside and the outside while emphasizing the importance of understanding the surrounding environment, the building’s initial function, and the needs of the client.
