Nestled within the floodplains of the Okavango Delta, Mombo Spa is conceived as a sanctuary of introspection — an architecture that guides guests on a deliberate journey inward and outward.
Building in this remote and environmentally sensitive landscape presented significant challenges. Seasonal flooding often disrupts access to site, with submerged bridges, deep river crossings, and runway closures complicating the transport of materials and labour. Construction therefore required careful logistical coordination and flexibility.
All structures are elevated above the ground to accommodate flooding and allow wildlife to move freely through the landscape. The placement of buildings and walkways was carefully considered to avoid established elephant paths, which could quickly damage structures.
The spa is approached through a planted oasis that contrasts with the surrounding open grasslands. Indigenous vegetation wraps the building while staggered pergolas filter sunlight across the approach, creating a threshold into a quieter environment. Water features weave through the architecture, giving the impression that the building floats within its landscape.
The concept is anchored in the idea of a labyrinth — not as a puzzle to be solved, but as a path that surprises at every turn. The building’s form folds and arcs into itself through a series of curved walls, organic openings, and arches, creating a fluid form that conceals and reveals spaces as one moves through it. A unique challenge came across in supporting arches along curved walls, which was resolved in constructing walls, drawing out the arches by hand, before cutting and supporting what remained. This ‘carving’ away of form creates spaces that feel natural and respond directly to the human scale.
Natural materials such as canvas, timber, and textured fabrics create warmth and tactility. At its centre, a sheltered lounge and remedy bar form a pause before guests retreat into private treatment spaces and resting cocoons.
Through its curving form and layered sequence of spaces, the spa becomes a quiet architectural journey of retreat, reflection, and return.

Black Sable Designs (Pty) Ltd

Black Sable is a Johannesburg-based architecture studio specialising in luxury safari lodges and remote hospitality projects across Africa. We work within diverse landscapes, from delta to savannah to forest, engaging deeply with place and treating nature as both context and collaborator.

We balance strong design leadership with a highly collaborative process, shaping each project through site immersion, iterative exploration and a hands-on approach. Through curvilinear forms, local materials and sustainable strategies, we craft spaces that are environmentally responsive and experientially rich.

From concept to completion, we deliver refined, narrative-driven architecture that merges technical precision with creativity. Each project is conceived as a lasting contribution to its environment, where conservation, culture and contemporary African design converge.
