On the site of the former machine-building plant, along the picturesque river, a new heart of the prestigious district of Moscow is being formed – an urban environment with an area of 73 hectares for 20,000 residents. This large-scale project is being implemented at the initiative of the Moscow Government and the development company and is designed to set a new vector for the development of the urban environment of the capital.
The task set by Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and Chief Architect of Moscow Sergei Kuznetsov is ambitious: to create a pilot microdistrict with advanced improvement standards, which will become the prototype of the My Street 2.0 program. The main principle is a “city for life,” focused not on an abstract resident of a metropolis, but on a real person: a pedestrian, cyclist, public transport passenger or a guest leaving the metro. It was important to first see the improvement, understand how the comfort of the townspeople will be built into the new environment, and only then proceed to the architecture of the district buildings. It was from an “eye view” – and not from a bird’s eye view – that each decision in the landscape was evaluated.
For the first time in the practice of large-scale urban planning, the architecture of buildings has given way to improvement. Leading architectural firms were waiting for the completion of the landscape concept in order to fit their objects into the already established environment. This made it possible from the very beginning to build a single set of rules (design code), which harmoniously connects residential complexes, offices, schools, the Krasny Oktyabr sports complex, embankments, boulevards, transit streets and approaches to the metro. The central idea is a seamless, seamless space where there are no sharp boundaries between the park and the street. The usual asphalt and the “cold” gray city palette were replaced by a warm, cozy environment with large-format beige tiles, rounded shapes, MAFs with brass inserts and wood lamination. Bike paths, canopies with green roofs, works of art (art objects) and even a tree museum – everything is subject to the principles of functionality, logistical connectivity and the author’s style of Scandinavian gardening ® with its geometry, purity of foundation and character.
The volume of landscaping was increased from 10% to 30%. This required complex coordination with city network specialists to free streets from engineering networks for trees. Most are elevated and protected by metal sides.
The heart of the district is a cascade park that combines recreation, education and development areas. A system of planted ditches (bioswales) for collecting and treating rainwater has been implemented here, and thematic groves become a platform for environmental excursions and acquaintance with the principles of sustainable development. “My Street 2.0” is a rethinking of the approach to creating an urban environment.
