The project is aligned with the Bay Ferry 2050 plan and is situated at the Berkeley Marina. Currently, the site is largely abandoned, reflecting a lack of connectivity between the city of Berkeley and the marina. The primary objective of the design is to reestablish this connection, unlocking the site’s potential while encouraging further exploration of the Berkeley Marina’s role in urban and ecological studies. The location offers breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay Bridge and the Oakland Bridge, enhancing its appeal as a site for innovative architectural intervention.

This project encompasses a multidisciplinary approach, addressing multiple scales and leveraging advanced technological methodologies. From an architectural perspective, the process begins with developing a master plan, progressing toward detailed massing studies. A significant feature of the project is its long cantilever structure, which celebrates the aesthetics of structural design. Through rigorous experimentation, we have optimized beam configurations, conducting small-scale mock-ups to validate their structural performance.

Ultimately, the project culminates in a series of technical and design experiments that combine functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. These investigations are integral to achieving a design that is not only structurally efficient but also harmonious with the cultural and environmental context of the Berkeley Marina.
