On the 46th floor of a Mumbai High Rise, The Grey House is the abode of a young couple, their daughter, and their shih tzu Mango. Being prior clients, they came to us with a lot of trust and faith that we could give them their vision of a stark, minimalistic home. Open spaces, white walls and only the bare necessary furniture.
The journey from concept to completion was deliberate, focusing on spaciousness in the living and dining areas. The centrepiece of the double-height living room is an off-centred artwork by Yusuf against a textured black wall. Adjacent, the open kitchen seamlessly integrates with the living space, concealed by 10’ high aluminium sliding panels with fluted glass.
The dining area boasts bespoke pieces, including a RIZO-designed table embedded with amber crystals and a brass-clad bar unit oxidized to varying levels for a striking effect. The mandir, echoing the kitchen’s design, features pocket doors with fluted glass panels.
Distinctive features abound, such as the customized door frames from WALTZ doors, seamlessly blending with the minimalist aesthetic. Skirting materials vary based on wall colour, maintaining continuity while accentuating each space.
Italian modular kitchen appliances from FCML – Ernestomeda blend seamlessly with the interior, complemented by furniture from MINOTTI and carpets from OBEETEE.
A multipurpose guest bedroom with a Murphy bed serves as a play area and accommodation for visitors. The attached bathroom continues the theme with terrazzo and concrete finish tiles, accented by a dramatic black-framed mirror.
A powder bathroom exudes character with concrete finish tiles, a live-edge wood counter, and an amoeba-shaped mirror, adding fluidity to the space.
A glass door leads to the study area flooded with natural light, featuring shelves for the family’s extensive book collection organized by colour.
The staircase, a focal point of the home, features metal treads clad in teak wood, appearing to float against Plaster of Paris-clad walls. The upper level boasts real wood flooring from HAVWOODS, housing the family room, master bedroom, and daughter’s room.
The family room offers a cosy retreat with a Blazer-MINOTTI sofa and a large projector screen, adorned with Sanjay Kumar’s depiction of The Buddha.
The daughter’s bedroom reflects her youthful spirit with custom-designed wallpaper and ample space for activities and storage.
The master bedroom exudes tranquillity with a Reeves–MINOTTI bed against concrete-textured walls. Clever storage solutions include fluted panels concealing storage space and ducts.
The master bathroom epitomizes luxury with grey matt tiles and a black artificial marble counter, featuring a bathtub and shower area.
This home for a family of three plus a very lovable dog is very contemporary and chic, minimal and serene. But though the look is minimal, the attention to detail and fruition of simplicity is maximum.

GA Design

GA Design is a multidisciplinary architecture and design practice based in Mumbai. It was founded in 1999 as Goregaonker Architects by brothers Rajan & Sachin Goregaoker. Today, the work at GA Design manifests creativity through well-choreographed architecture and interior spaces.
GA Design was set up at a time when the Mumbai metropolis was in the early stages of developing its structural and architectural milieu for modern-day living. They ventured into the market as an independent architecture firm engaged in residential building for real estate developers. As the city evolved, so did they. Steadily, they strengthened their foothold in architecture, before branching out into interior design with Shami Goregaoker and Ritu Goregaoker at the helm.
