IADA 2027: Healthcare & Education Interiors Category

International Architecture & Design Awards (IADA) logoInternational Architecture & Design Awards (IADA) 2027

Hospitals, clinics, schools and colleges are interiors where design directly affects wellbeing and learning. The International Architecture & Design Awards (IADA) recognise healthcare and education interiors in dedicated nominations, evaluated by an independent international jury. This page focuses on those nominations, how these interiors are judged, the IADA 2027 fees and deadlines and recent winners. For all other interiors, see our general IADA interior design category page.

Why enter the healthcare and education interiors category of IADA?

Healthcare and education projects are designed under strict technical, hygiene and safety requirements, and good design in these settings is easy to overlook. An independent award gives the design team documented, third-party recognition that helps in future tenders and in conversations with hospital boards, universities and school operators.

Each IADA winner receives a published winner page with the project description, images, design team and credits. Certificates, winner logos and graphic materials are available in the participant account, and a physical trophy can be ordered separately; it is optional. IADA is organised by Architecture & Design Community (ADC) and has run since 2019; IADA 2027 lists 19 disciplines and 640 nominations in total.

Healthcare and education nominations at IADA 2027

Healthcare interiors have their own nomination in the Interior discipline. Schools, colleges and universities are entered under Public Building & Institutional Interior Design, and libraries have a dedicated nomination. Lighting and furniture designed for these settings can be entered in their own disciplines. Choose the nomination that matches the project; each additional nomination is paid separately.

Nomination Discipline Typical projects
Healthcare & Medical Facility Interior Design Interior Hospitals, clinics, dental and medical practices, care centres
Public Building & Institutional Interior Design Interior Schools, colleges, universities and other public and institutional interiors
Library & Reading Room Design Interior Libraries, reading rooms and study spaces
Healthcare and Medical Lighting Lighting Lighting for clinical and care environments
Healthcare & Hospital Furniture Furniture Furniture designed for healthcare settings

Hospital and school buildings as architecture fit the Architecture discipline; see our page on IADA public and cultural buildings category. Compare all options on the IADA categories and nominations page.

Built projects and concepts

IADA accepts both completed interiors and concepts, and the project status is shown on each winner page. Recent winners include completed healthcare interiors in the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Poland and Italy, Centennial College A Building Expansion in Canada, a completed Platinum winner in Public Building & Institutional Interior Design, and OLOGY TECH SCHOOL in India, a Platinum winner in the same nomination presented as a concept. Students are judged by the same jury against the same criteria and receive a 50% discount on everything except trophies.

How healthcare and education interiors are judged

Each member of the jury evaluates every project in its nomination against three criteria:

  • Innovation & Originality: fresh ideas that improve the experience of patients, staff, students or teachers.
  • Design & Aesthetic Quality: materials, light, colour and detailing that meet technical requirements without feeling institutional.
  • Functionality & Spatial Integration: clear circulation, accessibility and spaces that support care or learning.

The jury scores each entry against these published criteria and the scores are averaged. The highest-ranked projects receive Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze awards, and Honourable Mentions may also be given. Meet the jury on the IADA jury page.

Preparing a strong healthcare or education entry

In these interiors the jury wants to see both the atmosphere and the way the space works. Show the users’ journey, not only the most photogenic room.

  • Explain the brief: who uses the space, the clinical or educational programme and the technical constraints.
  • Include plans that show circulation, zoning and accessibility.
  • Explain how materials, acoustics and lighting support wellbeing, hygiene or concentration.
  • State the project status (built or concept) and credit the full team, including specialist consultants.

Our guide How to enter IADA covers the materials you need and the order in which to prepare them.
