Located in the heart of Taipei, BOOTH transcends the gastro-pub typology to become a cultural incubator where dining, music, and the act of creation converge. Conceived by its musician-proprietors—leading figures in the local entertainment industry—the project merges a refined restaurant with a professional-grade recording studio. The design brief was clear: to forge a space that eliminates the delay between a fleeting idea and its capture, establishing a seamless workflow between social life and creative discipline. The name itself, “BOOTH,” directly references the recording booth, symbolizing its function as a vessel for sound and immediate artistic expression.
The threshold is articulated as a theatrical pause—a recessed doorway that frames the signage and prepares visitors for the immersive experience within. An antechamber with high-standing tables acts as a crucial buffer zone, allowing conversations to unfold before guests are drawn into the main hall. A fluid, looping circulation choreographs movement, gracefully accommodating intimate dinners, social gatherings, and large-scale events with equal ease.
Acoustics are the soul of the project. The visual and sonic anchor is a pair of vintage JBL 4350 loudspeakers from the 1970s, each weighing over 100 kilograms, meticulously integrated into reinforced cabinetry above the bar. This is not a decorative gesture; as the founders assert, it is an extension of “our life and our mission.” Paired with turntables and a DJ console, they craft an atmosphere of high-fidelity nostalgia. The recording studio, strategically concealed within the floor plan, achieves exceptional acoustic isolation. It remains a silent sanctuary for artists, impervious to the vibrant energy of the bar, ready to capture creativity at a moment’s notice.
The material palette reinforces a semi-retro aesthetic with contemporary precision. Green glazed bricks, reminiscent of historic railway tiles, dialogue with wood-clad marble tabletops and Italian decorative plaster that lends the walls a painterly, light-catching texture. The nearly 3.7-meter-high ceiling amplifies the sense of volume, while strategically angled windows mediate views, balancing transparency with privacy. A glass-enclosed salon and two semi-circular banquettes offer gradients of enclosure, fostering intimate dialogues within the larger collective scene.
Ultimately, BOOTH is more than a restaurant; it is a living tableau of Taipei’s urban culture and a direct manifestation of its founders’ vision. It proposes a new model where gastronomy and artistic production are not just adjacent but deeply intertwined. Here, sound, space, and social exchange compose a contemporary cultural salon, proving that leisure and rigorous creativity can resonate in perfect harmony.
