INCEPTIO
A new physical and semantic implant that revives the Krestovnikov Brothers Factory building in Kazan, frozen in time and space
ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK
Valuable historical artifacts are stored in transparent safes on the ground surface.
“JEWELRY BOX”
The new object retreats 2.5 meters inward from the existing walls. An air joint is formed between the old wall and the new volume. Along the perimeter, the ground surface 2.5 m wide is covered with a lens of water. The geometric characteristics of the new form inside are predetermined by the historical boundaries of the building.
TOUCH
The protuberances of the new volume catch the windows in the old walls and simultaneously support them. The protuberances contain rooms. Sometimes one of the surfaces reveals the inner life.
PATH OF LIGHT
All the new spaces are penetrated by light openings. The presence of the factory is felt in each room.
MAIN LOBBY
The plot of the central space is based on the preservation of old brick walls with traces of losses and a new intervention in the form of a concrete shell with an internal indentation from the old walls.
Three artifacts create accents in the space. A horizontal marble slab with a round bowl of water and chamber light. A horizontal marble column. On the left side is a wall of the internal new volume with an exposure of the internal life.
INSIDE. VILLA
A 2-storey villa is located in a 3-storey wing of the historical building of the former factory partnership named after the Krestovnikov Brothers.
The complex geometry of the historical walls, their thickness, intimacy and small dimensions of the spaces determined the “museumified” approach to creating a living space.
The entire interior is a single wooden ligature, or web with mutual and own support, for maximum preservation of the old walls – in fact, it is a single hand carpentry product made by the hand of one master.
INSIDE. APARTMENT
The interiors of the apartments reveal the plots of the adjoining balconies of the new building with the historical walls of the factory.
Wooden warm and cozy interiors inside laconic white volumes contrast with the rough preserved brick of the factory.
INSIDE. PENTHOUSE
A penthouse is located on the top floor . The penthouse is turned in both directions from the ridge, the kitchen-living room, open terrace and study overlook the views of the Nizhniy Kaban Lake. The dining room adjoins the open terrace-courtyard, in which a small garden of herbs and shrubs is laid out. The stained glass wall catches the first rays of the sun from the east and illuminates the room. A cozy living room is formed under the slope of the roof, the room is illuminated by a skylight in the roof. A brick wall is visible from the window, the contrast with which emphasizes the coziness of the room, the softness of the light furniture and carpet, the warmth of the wooden furniture and wall decoration.
Architectural bureau WALL
WALL is an architectural firm founded in 2014 by Ruben Arakelyan and Hayk Navasardyan. Based in Moscow, the studio focuses on three key areas: project work, research, and educational activities.
At the heart of WALL’s design activities lies the desire to create a comfortable environment for humans on various scales, from product design to large urban development projects. Over the past ten years, the bureau has developed projects for more than 250 significant residential and public buildings in Moscow and other regions of Russia.
The vector of education is realized through the teaching experience of Ruben Arakelyan at the Moscow Architectural Institute (MArchI).
Research is not just a stage, but an integral part of the creative process. Each project is preceded by a deep and comprehensive analysis. Moreover, WALL architects conduct independent research, the results of which are discussed at events and conferences dedicated to architecture and urban planning education.
