Three buildings frame a small urban square, with the church and parish hall facing each other. Both buildings are aligned with the street at eaves level. The significantly lower new building is subordinate to the existing structures, whilst at the same time holding the ensemble together visually. Facing the square, the parish hall appears as a single-storey building, with an asymmetrical, gently sloping gable roof. The building makes clever use of the topography and features a lower garden level that opens out to lawns and play areas to the south. The central square is connected to the market square behind the church. The pathways between the church, the parish hall and the lower-lying vicarage are designed to be barrier-free. A characteristic feature of the new community centre is the use of Grauwacke quarry stone for the façades, a material typical of the region that has been used in construction here for centuries. The natural stone surfaces are structured by precisely positioned openings with deeply cut reveals. The external walls have a double-shell construction: in front of the load-bearing wall with core insulation, the rubble stone masonry has been laid as a facing course of polygonally cut Grauwacke. Steel beams above the openings transfer the load, making large window sizes possible
The choice of greywacke meets not only aesthetic but also ecological criteria: the natural stone is sourced from local quarries, is durable and blends harmoniously in colour with the surrounding half-timbered and rubble-stone buildings. The precise craftsmanship results in a surface that vividly continues the dialogue between the historic fabric and contemporary architecture.

Kastner Pichler Schorn Architekten

Jochem Kastner, Konstantin Pichler-ter Horst, Stephan Schorn, and their dedicated team create bespoke architecture with a focus on housing, education, sacred spaces, and culture. For them, architecture is fundamentally about shaping spaces for people—regardless of typology or scale. They believe it has the power to resonate deeply, offering room for personal development and lasting meaning. Each project begins with a story, rooted in its unique context, and evolves through a collaborative process that embraces fresh perspectives. At the heart of their practice lies a dialogue between place and purpose. By thoughtfully analyzing both, they reveal hidden potentials and synergies that guide their design. Their work is grounded in a commitment to sustainability, beauty, and relevance—always with an awareness of economic viability. The result is architecture that fosters interaction and identity, defined by a balanced relationship between people, nature, and the built environment.
