Kristall: Reviving a Protected Industrial Monument — From Vodka Empire to Living Heritage Landscape
On the 6-hectare site of the former Moscow Distillery “Kristall” — founded in 1901 as the Imperial State Wine Warehouse No.1 and later the country’s largest spirits producer — we have carefully revived a protected cultural heritage monument on the banks of the Yauza River. Designed by architect N.G. Faleev, the complex holds official heritage status and embodies over 120 years of Russian industrial history, including its vital role during the Great Patriotic War.
The challenge was to transform the post-industrial territory into a vibrant creative district for artists, content creators and gastronomes, while strictly observing principles of minimal intervention and historical authenticity.
Through meticulous archival research we rescued key artefacts: early 20th-century geometric decorative patterns, 1970s modernist sculptures, brutalist outdoor lighting fixtures, and a surviving fragment of freight rails. Each element underwent non-invasive conservation using original materials. The abandoned rails became a 280-metre linear heritage park and flexible event spine.
Eighty-seven percent of the existing “urban jungle” canopy was retained in situ, protecting the site’s authentic character. The severed connection to the adjacent park was restored through a sensitive biophilic corridor with tactile surfaces and seasonal scent gardens.
Pedestrian routes turn every movement into an educational journey: recreated 1901 patterns appear in permeable paving, restored brutalist lights (LED-upgraded, –70% energy) illuminate original brick facades, and interpretive nodes reveal the site’s layered history. The landscape functions as a living museum, actively engaging local artists and residents.
We developed mobile modular planters of printed concrete with crystal patterns, allowing flexible reconfiguration of relaxation zones for different events. Diverse areas include a yoga platform, artefact exhibition walk, children’s playgrounds, swings and full barrier-free access. The historic square with its fountain was preserved and enhanced; seven original bas-reliefs were restored and relocated into pedestrian zones.
Planting was selected for year-round decorative effect, urban resilience and exclusion of allergens, with a natural-style palette matched to the site’s colour code.
By preserving 100% of protected building envelopes, managing stormwater through linear rain gardens and increasing biodiversity, the project proves that contemporary landscape design can honour, interpret and sustainably activate cultural heritage without compromise.
This is not renovation — it is the true resurrection of a national monument, delivering measurable conservation value, strong community connection and timeless cultural resonance.
