Project Brief
Revitalisation of the Neo-Gothic Gymnasium at Primary School No. 1, Szczecin, Poland
Project Description
The project concerns the revitalisation of a historic neo-Gothic gymnasium located within the Primary School No. 1 complex in Szczecin. Built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the hall represents a rare example of early school sports architecture, combining functional clarity with refined historic detailing.
Prior to the intervention, the building had been excluded from use due to severe technical deterioration and a real risk of structural failure. The gymnasium was threatened with collapse, and its continued existence as a functional public space was uncertain.
Initial Condition and Structural Challenges
The original steel roof structure was significantly damaged and required detailed structural analysis. Visible wartime bullet impacts and material losses testified to the building’s complex history and necessitated careful engineering decisions balancing safety, preservation, and authenticity. The design process was preceded by in-depth structural assessments to determine the scope of reinforcement and conservation.
Conservation Research
Conservation studies were conducted to identify the original colour scheme of the historic ceiling. Stratigraphic research enabled the accurate reconstruction of the original neo-Gothic palette, restoring the spatial identity and historic atmosphere of the interior.
Integration of Contemporary Technologies
A key challenge was the introduction of advanced building services into the historic structure without disrupting its architectural integrity. A central ventilation and heat recovery unit was suspended within the roof space, allowing the interior volume to remain visually unobstructed. Air intakes and exhausts were discreetly integrated into restored historic consoles, merging modern technology with historic form.
Sports and Educational Function
The revitalised hall meets contemporary standards for school sports facilities. Modern, technologically advanced solutions were implemented, including a high-performance wooden sports floor suitable for multiple disciplines. Lighting, ventilation, acoustics and safety systems were carefully coordinated to support intensive daily use by pupils while preserving the historic character of the space.
Architectural Significance
The project demonstrates how a severely endangered historic structure can be transformed into a fully functional, contemporary sports facility through the integration of conservation research, advanced engineering, and sensitive architectural design. The gymnasium has been restored as a vital educational and community space, securing its continued use for future generations.
