The revitalized passenger terminal at the Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM) presents a warmly elegant welcome to the New York Southern Tier that elevates the passenger experience and reflects the region’s natural beauty. The revitalization, which includes a 37,000 SF renovation and 5,800 SF addition to the existing terminal, was awarded $32 million from the Governor’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Grant Competition to integrate the General Aviation Terminal with the Passenger Terminal—streamlining operations, improving circulation, and unifying existing structures of varying ages.
The regional airport, municipally run by Broome County, handles more than 36,000 enplanements each year consisting of both commercial and charter flights. The airport serves a diverse range of travelers, including local and higher-ed communities, tourists, and a growing business sector. The renovation resourcefully ties together the existing structures, seamlessly creating a unique, comfortable, first-class experience that feels intimate for charter and commercial passengers alike.
The terminal’s lodge-like design features a striking canopy that mirrors the peaks and valleys of surrounding mountains, while warm wood accents enrich interior and exterior—echoing the surrounding forests viewable from the departures lounge and airfield from baggage claim through light corridors that connect the land and air sides of the terminal.
Comfortable, rustic furniture reinforces the lounge-like experience, and a locally inspired graphic mural playfully showcases Binghamton’s iconic carousels, creating a strong sense of place.
The project fully upgrades the airport by renovating the departures lounge, holding lounge, and baggage claim area, reconfiguring the ticketing lobby and outbound baggage area to improve circulation and efficiency. Terminal facilities and amenities, including restrooms, office space, and a multi-purpose room, are also upgraded and refurnished. New additions include a TSA Checkpoint/Exit Lane, new passenger boarding bridges to support larger aircraft, HVAC upgrades, airport approach improvements, and new canopies and entries.
