Lazenby Terrazzo brings continuous design aesthetic to the LSE’s Marshall Building – ADC

Buildings.

Premium decorative concrete specialist, Lazenby has recently undertaken a major project with Mace, as part of a £92m new-build development at the London School of Economics (LSE). The company installed a one-of-a-kind Terrazzo floor featuring three different colours in geometric shapes, in the Marshall Building, as well as two Terrazzo staircases and a 30-metre long Terrazzo bench.

More than 1,000-square-metres of Lazenby’s cementitious Terrazzo flooring was poured insitu throughout the entrance space. The complex flooring design comprises three different colour and aggregate combinations, each separated by aluminium rails.

The helical staircase emerges from the Great Hall and extends through five floors; its unique design and construction method providing a strong visual statement. Bespoke-cut polystyrene void former was added to the ramped subfloor followed by a lightweight, reinforced concrete slab. Lazenby’s hand-mixed 30mm Terrazzo system forms the ultra-slim top layer.

The space is finished with a 30-metre-long Terrazzo bench, which provides the ideal place for students to meet and socialise. A project of this scale and ambition is unique and, for Mace, Lazenby was the obvious choice, achieving a remarkable architectural feat that “exactly matches the client and architect’s vision.”
