The project

Clients Katherine and James contacted Cox Architects at the height of the pandemic in 2020, when they were thinking of buying a larger house in a leafy south-London suburb, which could provide them with more space and a generous rear garden.

Bringing the outside in

The only problem was that the garden was north facing and, as light-loving New Zealanders, they were worried that the house would be too dark. Cox Architects was able to reassure the clients, that with the right design, it could ensure high levels of daylight to the interior, while improving the visual connection between house and garden. Budgetary concerns dictated a facelift of the existing structure rather than a rebuild, so the design is a sort of ‘stage set’ behind which a lot of the original building still sits.

Light, bright, open-plan living

Cox Architects and builder Elson Properties approached Stella Rooflight to commission three bespoke rooflights, which would transform the renovation and flood the new open-plan living space with daylight.

A bespoke rooflight solution

The main rooflight comprises a large, fixed design, measuring 5641mm wide by 2022mm high, and incorporating four glazing bars and five high-performance double-glazed units. The second rooflight is also fixed and measures 2311mm wide by 2022mm high, while the third is manually-opening and measures 1226mm wide by 2022mm high.

All three rooflights were manufactured with a 316L stainless steel frame, and a high-performance marine-grade powder-coated finish. The glass units comprise a 6mm SGG BioClean Natura glass with a self-clean and solar control outer pane, a 16mm black warm edge spacer filled with argon gas, and a 6mm Planitherm one inner pane. American ash liners complete the stunning internal appearance, complementing the sleek, classy finish throughout the rest of the house.
