Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Vltava River and the Church of St. Philip and Jacob in Zlíchov, the Green House adopts a distinct, fine scraped green render façade – a move which gives the project its name and blends the building with the vegetation that surrounds it.

Inside, light filters through these surrounding plants and trees through large apertures and into the living spaces to create a warm interior that is amplified by new timber joinery that has been added to the home.

Ascending a wooden staircase, guests are greeted by the main living unit, spread across two floors. The lower of these floors makes use of floor-to-ceiling windows to frame panoramic views of the river, while a spacious terrace can be used for alfresco dining and leisurely gatherings, with this space feeding off from an open plan kitchen diner and living area with low seating.

The upper floor offers a retreat for contemplation and creative work, with a study and lounge area hosting a fireplace and offering expansive views out over the treetops and adjacent rooftops. Behind the studio is a separate private zone with a bedroom, dressing room and blue bathroom.

Custom-built furniture has been added to contrast with the original materiality of the home, of which some, namely the concrete structure, has been left and exposed. Tables made of polished solid tropical padouk wood on a steel structure were designed especially for the house, while the client’s older furniture has been incorporated, too.

Downstairs, a small studio apartment provides a moment of privacy for guests, with this space as well having its own terrace overlooking the garden. Future plans for the garden include adding exotic fruit trees, a tranquil water feature, and even a vineyard.
