Transforming Two Apartments into a Harmonious Coastal Retreat

Blending Two Residences into One Cohesive Home

Perched atop the Dorset coastline, this striking new-build project by UK-based interior designers Dream Design is a testament to the power of visionary design and early intervention. Originally conceived as two separate apartments, the internal plans were reimagined by Dream Design in collaboration with the architects, ensuring the space evolved into a seamless, contemporary home that maximises light, flow, and functionality.

“We recognised an opportunity to create something far more cohesive and refined,” explains Andrew Rizza, Creative Director at Dream Design. “By reconfiguring the internal layout at an early stage, we were able to shape the architecture around a singular design vision — one that prioritises openness, spatial harmony, and timeless elegance.”

An Open-Plan Design with Seamless Flow

A defining aspect of the new layout was the removal of the intended dividing wall between what were originally planned as two separate living areas. This strategic decision transformed the space into a singular, light-filled home, creating a fluid transition between the kitchen, dining, and lounge areas. A structural steel support beam, required for integrity, was discreetly clad in white to blend effortlessly into the interior.

Materiality played a crucial role in unifying the space. Whitewashed ash wood-effect porcelain flooring extends throughout, providing a cohesive foundation, while matching internal doors and staircase finishes reinforce the sense of continuity and balance. In the kitchen, SieMatic SLX cabinetry in Hamptons blue introduces sophistication with a coastal influence. A light grey stone-effect porcelain island and worktop offer a refined contrast, while marble-effect porcelain cladding on the hob walls and window surrounds enhances depth and architectural interest.

A Luxurious Principal Suite

Designed as a private retreat within the home, the principal bedroom embraces layered textures and tailored craftsmanship. A bespoke panelled feature wall in vertical fluted bronze and mirrored strips not only acts as a striking focal point but also conceals sliding panels that reveal a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite shower room.

A calming palette of deep blues and neutrals reinforces the home’s connection to its coastal surroundings. The leather-upholstered bed, side tables, and petite swivel armchairs mirror the tones of the statement headboard wallpaper, while a custom rug — its abstract patterns inspired by the shifting sands visible from the balcony — further enhances the connection to nature.

“The clients wanted more than just a luxury apartment — they wanted a home that feels immersive, serene, and intimately tied to the landscape,” adds Rizza. “Our approach focused on materiality, texture, and a seamless spatial flow to achieve exactly that.”

Challenging Convention & Redefining Space

This project underscores the power of design intervention at the architectural stage. Rather than accepting the original dual-apartment blueprint, Dream Design’s reconfiguration transformed the layout into something far more considered and liveable. The seamless transition between living spaces, the careful material selections, and the thoughtful concealment of structural elements demonstrate how early design decisions can elevate not just aesthetics, but the very function of a home.

“This wasn’t about adapting an existing space — it was about rethinking what was possible,” reflects Rizza. “By stepping in early, we were able to sculpt an entirely new vision — one that feels natural, fluid, and unmistakably home.”

The result is a sophisticated yet inviting coastal retreat, where architecture and interior design work in complete harmony — a space designed not just to be lived in, but to be experienced.
